What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are small titanium fixtures, which are used to mimic and replace absent teeth. These titanium fixtures are anchored completely into bone, thereby preventing any type of misplacement and detachment. We insert these implants into the jawbone either in the upper (maxilla) or the lower (mandible) jaws depending on where the spaces lie, which then give us the possibly to attach crowns, bridges and even in some cases overdentures. It goes without saying that dental implants can be used to replace single unit teeth, or even multiple teeth.

** Why use dental implants instead of conventional bridges and dentures?**

Tooth loss is never something pleasant, the absence of teeth causes tipping of adjacent teeth, thereby migrating into the space. This can have negative impacts on occlusion of the patient (the ability to close your mouth comfortably). This can also cause impaction of food into these spaces. The antagonist teeth on the opposite arch also start to raise out of bone to fill in the space when the mouth is at rest.

**We have different treatments for missing teeth, such as bridges, and dentures.
**
Bridges are great treatments, where we prepare neighbour teeth removing healthy enamel, and place crowns on these teeth to support and retain the bridges. Dental implants bypass this technique as we don’t need to prepare any healthy teeth (which means these teeth will have a longer lifespan).

Dentures are also options. Dentures are foreign objects usually made from acrylic resin, which contains the missing teeth. Dentures are removable, occasionally uncomfortable, and not always the most stable in the mouth. In time, dentures also create pressure on the gums of the mouth, which can have a detrimental impact on the level of jawbone. Dental implants act identically to the roots of teeth, and so take the pressure of biting and chewing in the same manner. This means that the level of bone will not be compromised, there will also be no fiddling about with a removable appliance.

Dental Implant Systems used in the clinic

At Manor Dental Centre, Oadby, Leicester; we offer two main types of implant systems. Dr Govani is now very accomplished in the BICON implant system which originates from Boston, USA. Having trained in this system at the HQ in Boston itself, and in Cartagena, Columbia- he has incredible precision and practice in this system.

BICON is the ideal solution to Dental Implants, and by far the most advanced system on the market. By using “cold welding”instead of the original “screw”implants- along with the short implant system, they’re perfect for biocompatibility (they have fantastic results with bone integration!). In addition to more predictable and versatile placement techniques, Bicon’s dental implant design provides a bacterially-sealed implant to abutment connection. Bicon SHORT® Implants afford simpler and consistently more predictable treatments, which can significantly increase a patient’s acceptance of dental implants. These dental implants are notorious for being very aesthetically pleasing!
