Can someone who has had an implant, describe the process they went through?
I'm in the final stretch of receiving my implant which has been a very long process. It started in late January when I cracked a tooth and it was recommended I choose an implant vs trying to save the tooth with a crown. It will be about a 6-9 month process from the time of the tooth extraction. It goes like this:
1. Find an implant specialist you like - which may or may not be your general dentist -depending on how difficult the procedure will be. I used an oral surgeon.
2. Determine if you need a bone graft to build the bone back up in your jaw. It saves you money if you don't need one.
3. Wait 3-6 months for the implant to be placed post extraction. It depends on how quickly you healed and if you needed the bone graft. The process for the implant took about an hour with local anesthetic.
4. Wait another 3-4 months so the initial implant post can heal which will then allow for the crown to be placed on top of it.
Though long, not as bad as i thought and it will hopefully last forever!
Thank you for the info. I didn't realize it took that long.
